The Frontier Formation and equivalent sediments were deposited in, or on the margins of, a shallow sea which covered the Western Interior region during the Cenomanian and Turonian stages of the Late Cretaceous. Most of the oil production at the Salt Creek field is from lenticular sand bodies in the Frontier. These sand bodies are interpreted as offshore bars.
